Qualification Course for Trainers (PJ3)
October 13-19,2008 in Bacolod City, Philippines

Review by Antonia Koop

For the second time, PECOJON invited experienced journalists and teachers to participate in a Qualification Course for Trainers on Conflict Sensitive Journalism in the Philippines.

Out of several applicants, 8 were selected who shared their talent for training, long years of professional experience, and their commitment and dedication to boost journalism practice beyond its comfort zone.

In the one-week workshop, the team developed trainings and modules, discussed teaching methodologies, and also further explored the theoretical concepts and challenges arising out of the practice of Conflict Sensitive Journalism in the Philippines.

The course once more gathered a group of exceptional individuals:
Maria Frencie Carreon, Zamboanga Today, Zamboanga City
Roehl Jamon, University of the Philippines and GMA7, Manila
Therence Gary Koh, Agence France Press, Zamboanga City
Ann Lourdes Lopez, Asian Institute of Journalism and Communication, Manila
Marilou Manar, Notre Dame Broadcasting Corporation, Kidapawan
Jessica Cyrille Pabellon, Ateneo de Zamboanga University
Ed Karlon Rama, Sun.Star Cebu, Cebu City
Conrado Jr. Saceda, Philippine Star, Zamboanga City

All of the participants showed passion, talent and skills, and they were all accepted for the Trainers’ Development Program.

This Program aims to further enhance the capacities of the future trainers through a more individual development strategy, which can include further trainings, documentation of trainings, individually selected reading materials and tasking, and in a later stage, co-facilitation and development of training materials.

Those who would successfully complete the Trainers’ Development Program will have gained comprehensive theoretical knowledge and understanding of the subject and related areas of expertise, and will have proven their talent and skills to teach and train a variety of groups and participants. They will also have shown great investment and commitment to their chosen task as trainers and to PECOJON’s ideals and values and have thereby demonstrated the capacity to provide high-quality trainings with international standards in the name of PECOJON and also beyond the network.

The Qualification Course was facilitated by Shirley Evidente from the University of the Philippines, and Ryan Rosauro from the Philippine Daily Inquirer, who was recently elected as Philippine Coordinator for PECOJON together with Antonia Koop.
